Weight is something that so many North Americans struggle
with. The world is full of convenient, inexpensive and
unhealthy (but oh so yummy) choices for the person on the go.
Pair that with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and you’ve
got a recipe for obesity. The good news is, as soon as you
decide to live differently and make that change – you’ll be
well on your way to losing that thirty pounds and having the
body that you want. Imagine that – looking in the mirror at
yourself and saying, “Wow! I look great!” Well believe it! I
know from having been 60 pounds heavier than I am right now. It
seems like the weight will never leave. But if you stick with a
healthy weight loss plan – you will reach the goals that you
set for yourself. The real secret from my perspective has been
patience. I started my own weight loss journey 1 ½ years ago
after the birth of my first son. Just recently, I surpassed my
original weight loss goal and reached my ultimate weight loss
goal of 120 pounds (I’m five feet). I can’t tell you how
excited I am to buy a new bathing suit this year since I’ve
shrunk out of my old one. Anyway, the point is – thirty pounds
is just that – thirty pounds. It’s totally doable and you will
lose each and every one of those annoying pounds.
Basic Tips to Lose Those Thirty Pounds…
There are some simple changes that you can start making to
your life immediately that will aid you in your weight loss
goal.
- Incorporate activity every day. The
little things do add up. If you can walk to work once in a
while, or take the dog for a walk in the evenings – these
will be extra calories burned, on top of your planned
workouts. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or have a
power walk on your lunch break. You can’t lose thirty
pounds all in one go – but making activity a part of your
every day life will burn extra calories in the short term
and will help to create a lifestyle that you can
maintain.
- Enlist a friend who has similar goals to your
own if possible. There is a
reason why weight loss plans containing a meeting aspect
are successful. It helps to stay connected with others
concerning your progress because it helps keep you focused.
Do you really want to divulge to your workout buddy that
you polished off a pizza on the weekend? No, so the option
is not to do anything that you’ll feel guilty about
later.
- Keep things interesting. Try a new
workout routine like cardio kickboxing or belly dancing.
Incorporate a new food into your diet – shake things up
when you can. You will get sick of lettuce greens, tomatoes
and cucumbers – trust me. What do you do when you don’t
feel like doing “the circuit” at the gym anymore? You take
both as an opportunity to try something different. You’ll
need to keep yourself interested if you’re going to be
successful.
- Don’t forget to adjust as your weight
does. When you lose your first ten pounds, make a
conscious effort to try something different at the gym to
challenge your body. As well, if you’re ten pounds lighter
– you’ll need fewer calories. Decrease your calories as the
pounds start to come off. But – of course don’t cut them
too much or you’ll throw your system into starvation
mode.
- Plan your meals and your snacks as best you
can. If you plan ahead and know what you’ll be
eating for the day, it takes the guess work out of your
meals. Will you really eat a salad with grilled chicken if
you don’t make it the night before? No, you won’t. You’ll
get take-out or grab something out of the nearest vending
machine. It’s like anything else – being prepared for your
meals will get easier and become a habit.
- Use smaller plates. It may sound
silly, but it helps. If you put proper portions of food
onto a dinner plate – sometimes the meal can look pretty
pathetic. Have you any idea what an actual serving of
spaghetti looks like? A smaller plate tricks the brain into
thinking you’re eating a full plate of food and you’ll be
satisfied with less.
- Take a serious look at how you’ve gotten to be
thirty pounds overweight. It doesn’t just happen
over night. There is some reason for why you’ve made
certain life choices. You may be busy, lazy, sad, happy, or
tired. Many people lose weight when they realize it’s been
a protective barrier for them… shielding them from issues
of the past. You’ll only be successful long term with
weight loss when you deal with any skeletons that may be
lurking in your closet.
- Sleep. It is monumentally important to
get your 7-8 hours of sleep a night in order to lose
weight. Think of your body as a machine. It needs fuel to
run – food, but it also needs to be re-charged every day.
Yes, it will run without sleep (as any new parent knows)
but it will not run efficiently. Sleep deprivation leads to
poor food choices, lack of exercise and actually burning
fewer calories. You need to make sleep a priority if you
really want to drop those thirty pounds.
It’s not easy to lose weight. But, it can be done. You need
to first start with a personal commitment and a plan to lose
the weight. Educate yourself about healthy eating and proper
exercise (include cardio and resistance training). Slowly, but
surely, make lifestyle changes that really can last for a
lifetime – not just for now. You can lose thirty pounds - but
it all starts with the conscious decision to get the job
done.
