Although overeating and obesity is the cause for many men
that are suffering from the problem of enlarged breast tissue,
there is actually a medical description of man boobs as well.
“Gynecomastia” may be the real reason behind your man boobs.
Basically, gynecomastia causes hormone levels to be out of
balance. In men, estrogen is increased and testosterone in
decreased. Estrogen is what gives females their feminine
traits, and so too much estrogen in a male can result in
enlarged breast tissue, i.e. man boobs. Men that use steroids
need to be especially careful, as they are at a higher risk of
developing gynecomastia than most men. It is a small percentage
of men who have medical causes for their man boobs. These men
may want to consider and research hormonal therapy or even
surgery to cure their man boobs. For all other men, the man
boobs are simply the result of an unhealthy lifestyle. The good
news is, if you change your unhealthy lifestyle with diet and
exercise, you can say, “Bye-bye” to those boobies forever.
Some Common Pitfalls in the Average Man’s Diet
- Alcohol. Beer, hard liquor, wine – it
doesn’t matter. If alcohol is currently a major (or minor)
part of your diet and lifestyle in general – it needs to be
the first thing to go. So, how attached are you to your
liquor? Because, if cutting the booze is too difficult for
you, you might as well get really comfortable with your
chest as it is. Alcoholic drinks have no nutritional value
to your body and add only empty calories. Depending on what
your drink of choice is, you may be adding anywhere from 80
– 300+ calories per drink. For someone who wants to lose
some weight, this is self-sabotage and needs to be
obliterated.
- Pop. Again, not totally unlike
alcohol, pop adds no nutritional value to your diet at all.
It contains loads of sugar which will only make your man
boobs bigger. So, if you’re serious about losing the extra
weight that you need to lose, cut out the pop as well.
- Evening and weekend bingeing. Whether
it’s by yourself after work, with the guys at the poker
game on Friday night, or with your buddies watching the
game on Sunday, snacking on junk food (especially when
you’re not hungry) may be a major contributor to your
weight issues. You need to be accountable for what you are
putting into your body. If you are eating for a reason
other than hunger (socializing, comfort etc.) and are
eating high sugar / high fat foods, then it is no wonder
that man boobs are a problem for you. Ditch the garbage
that you’ve been eating – no more chips, chocolate, greasy
foods, or deep fried foods.
- Cooking what’s quick and easy, rather than
what’s healthy. If you aren’t much of a stud in
the kitchen, than you may have fallen into the trap of
cooking what you are able to, rather than cooking what you
should be eating. If your diet consists mainly of nachos
and macaroni, it may be time to ask a friend for some help
and guidance in the kitchen – or take a cooking class.
- There’s no time. Many of us work long
hours and legitimately have no time to cook a healthy meal.
This may be a legitimate excuse, but playing the victim
will not rid you of those man boobs. You need to find the
time to prepare healthy meals, whether that means having
low fat frozen entrees on hand, or doing meal prep on the
weekend. If you travel a lot or spend a large part of your
day commuting in your car, it is even more difficult to
avoid the fast food. If you do go to the drive-through, try
to order a side salad instead of fries, grilled chicken
instead of fried and water to drink instead of pop. Try to
make healthy choices whenever possible.
The first step to abolishing your man boobs is to look at
how you eat. What do you eat? When do you eat? Do you skip
meals? If you can, meet with a dietician to help you with your
eating. You’ll learn how much a portion is and you’ll get
helpful meal ideas as well. The second step to losing your man
boobs is to intensify your workout routine. You’ll need to do a
combination of cardio and strength training. You can’t do only
exercises that work your chest muscles. You need to do cardio
so that you burn fat all over and then do some exercises to
target your chest specifically as a part of your strength
training.

- Elliptical Trainer
- Treadmill
- Stair-climber
- Rower
- Bicycling
- Running/walking on the track or outside
- Boxing or kickboxing
- Sports (any sport will do – from soccer, to golf,
basketball to rugby)
Exercises for Strength Training (10-12
reps):
Push-ups are one of the best exercises to do if you’re
trying to rid yourself of man boobs. They are effective and
can be done anywhere. With arms shoulder width apart, lower
down, keeping your body in a straight line. Go as low as
possible and lift back up.
Lying on the bench, slowly lift the weight upward and
lower down. The slower you move, the more you’ll be working
your chest.
In a seated position, and keeping your back firmly
against the bench, push the weight out in front of you
slowly. Then, return back to starting position.
You can rid yourself of those man boobs, if you put in the
work that is required of you. First, try to focus on your
eating. If you can stop some of your unhealthy habits you’ll be
much more likely to lose your man boobs. In addition, you’ll
need to commit to working out (cardio and strength) on a
regular basis 4-5 times a week. If you’re willing to put the
