Losing Baby
Weight
I’ve been there. Anyone who’s had a baby
has been there. I’ve stood staring at my less than flat
stomach, squeezing my disgusting muffin tops and cringing
at just how much “junk” I’d accumulated in my “trunk”. We
all know that our bodies are going to change when we get
pregnant. But, when it’s all said and done we want our
bodies returned to us…a.s.a.p. Well, I’m here to shout it
from the roof tops, “It can be done!!!” Now before you get
too excited, let me explain. I said it can be done.
However, I didn’t say that it was going to be easy. Nor is
it going to be quick. But I promise it’ll be worth it.
I had my first child 1 ½ years ago. So, it’s taken me – you
guessed it about 1 ½ years to get my body back. Here’s the good
news: I’m in better shape now than before I got pregnant. I am
5 feet and was 150 pounds when I got pregnant. At my most
pregnant, I was 185 – and I left the hospital at approximately
175 pounds. I had a long way to go. But I’m on the other side
now at 120 pounds and in a size 4! I’m ready to share what
worked for me – in hopes that it may help you reach your goal
of becoming a “yummy-mummy”.

Some General Tips
- Make an appointment with a
dietitian. This helped me immensely! The
service is free in my community and it opened my eyes to
many things. The most important thing I learned was what a
portion actually looked like. Suffice to say - I’d been
eating more than my fair share.
- Stop eating like you’re
pregnant. It occurred to me one day as I
looked down at an enormous plate of food in front of me. I
was no longer “eating for two”. If I wanted to lose the
weight, I’d have to change the portions I’d become
accustomed to.
- Keep a food journal (you can use
the one on the last page of this
losing baby weight guide). I know that you don’t have time.
But for me – it worked. I didn’t realize exactly how much I
was eating until I saw it in black and white. Think about
why and when you eat. The real secret to my weight loss –
beyond my baby weight – is that I realized I ate a lot when
I wasn’t hungry. I ate because we had friends over. I ate
because I deserved it after a long day…so on and so on. Eat
to live – not the other way around.
- Take short cuts when you can. If
you’re going to make the commitment to get back into your
pre-baby shape – be nice to yourself. Take any kind of
short cut at this point, if it means that you’ll eat
healthier because of it. There are plenty of pre-mixed
salads available at the grocery store. Take your pick and
choose a low fat dressing. Buy pre-cut veggies for
stir-fries so that you don’t have to chop them yourself.
Thin peeled and pre-washed potatoes, pre-cooked rotisserie
chicken from the deli, and frozen veggies help to speed
along a variety of meals. Baby carrots, cherry tomatoes,
individual yogurts, fruit cups, shredded cheese, cottage
cheese, and small fruit or veggie trays from the deli are
great examples of snack items to have on hand. These snacks
are nutritious and take no real preparation.
- Eat more fruits and veggies. This
was a big one for me – and continues to be. I really
changed my eating in order to get down to this size. A
large part of that was always having plenty of fruits and
veggies in the fridge. But remember, don’t let them
rot.
- Drink plenty of water. Don’t go
crazy with this one. Some people go a little bit to the
extreme and then fall off the water wagon when they can’t
maintain the pace that they set. Just remember to drink
enough water to keep you well hydrated. As well, every cup
of coffee or tea requires approximately an extra glass of
water on top of your 6 – 8 glasses, due to the
caffeine.
- Sleep. HA HA HA!!! I can hear
you. I know what you’re thinking, “Sleep, I would if I
could – thank you very much.” The problem with having a
newborn and trying to lose the baby weight is that when our
bodies are sleep deprived, they burn fuel less efficiently
and also crave unhealthy foods. These are obstacles that we
need to at least be aware of – there are reasons why weight
loss takes time.
